Manu Expedition 6 Days

Departure 5:00 am from Cusco: a full day crossing the Andes. Stops at the Ninamarca funerary chullpas and at Paucartambo, town of the Virgen del Carmen, before the Acjanaco viewpoint and checkpoint (3,530 m). From there the road plunges through elfin forest (3,150 m) into the cloud forest (1,500 m): a green tunnel of orchids, bromeliads and waterfalls, home of the quetzal, the mountain toucan, the woolly monkey and the spectacled bear. At dusk, courtship display at the lek of the Andean cock-of-the-rock, Peru's national bird. Dinner and first night at a cloud-forest ecolodge, lulled by the sound of the river. Optional night walk in search of glass frogs.

Departure ~6:30 am with a stop at a hummingbird garden before reaching Puerto Atalaya (500 m), the end of the road. We board a motorized boat down the Alto Madre de Dios, with breakfast aboard: kingfishers, herons, skimmers, white caimans and capybaras on the beaches. A restorative bath in the natural hot springs of Aguas Calientes, surrounded by jungle. In the afternoon, a ~1-hour walk into a private ecological reserve to the lodge. After dark, the option of a vigil in a camouflaged hide facing a mammal clay lick: with patience and in shifts, you may see the South American tapir, the red brocket deer and the paca coming out to eat mineral clay under the moon. Dinner and night in the lowland jungle.

A full immersion river day. Early on we navigate ~4 hours down the Alto Madre de Dios to Boca Manu, the last village, where the sediment-laden Manu River joins the Madre de Dios. We turn upstream and register at SERNANP's Limonal ranger station: we officially enter the Reserved Zone, one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. The journey itself is a safari: white and black caimans basking, taricaya turtles lined up on logs, jabiru storks, capybaras on the beaches and — in the dry season, with luck — a jaguar resting on the shore. Howler, squirrel, capuchin and titi monkeys in the riverside canopy. Arrival at the camp/lodge near Cocha Salvador. Scouting walk at sunset, dinner and optional night walk.

At dawn, as the jungle wakes, we explore Cocha Salvador — Manu's largest oxbow lake — by paddled catamaran (motors are banned): this is the territory of a giant river otter family, the Amazon's rarest carnivore, which fishes at first light devouring up to 4 kg of fish a day. Sharing the lake: black caimans up to 4 meters, hoatzins, agami herons and horned screamers. On the surrounding trails up to 7 monkey species can be seen in a single day — spider, woolly, howler, capuchin, squirrel monkeys and tamarins — among 500-year-old ceibas and Brazil nut trees. Lunch, then an afternoon at Cocha Otorongo: a 15-meter observation tower over the lake, home of a second giant otter family. Encounter with Matsiguenka families and their handicrafts. Dinner and night walk: horned frogs, tarantulas and potoos.

We head down the Manu River early, re-registering at Limonal with final chances of spotting jaguars on the beaches. The day's destination: a macaw clay lick, observed from a raised blind with breakfast served on site — scarlet and red-and-green macaws arrive in pairs and groups until dozens of birds, together with hundreds of parrots and parakeets, carpet the clay wall in an explosion of color and noise (peak activity mid-morning). In the afternoon, a long forest walk and a climb up a canopy tower: plum-throated cotinga, white-throated toucan, paradise tanager and mixed flocks at treetop height. Return to the lowland lodge. Dinner and a final night walk: night monkey, giant monkey frog and tree snakes.

One last Amazonian dawn: breakfast to the howler chorus and navigation up the Alto Madre de Dios to Puerto Atalaya, with an optional stop at the Shintuya hot springs for a farewell soak. The van begins the climb of almost 3,000 meters: lowland jungle, cloud forest, elfin forest and puna, crossing Acjanaco and Paucartambo with lunch en route — the same ecological staircase as day one, now in reverse and with trained eyes. Arrival in Cusco between 5:00 and 6:30 pm and hotel drop-off. The end of an expedition through the Reserved Zone: 6 days, nearly 3,000 meters of altitude change and one of the most intact ecosystems on Earth.
