Manu Express 3 Days

Departure ~5:30 am from Cusco. Stops at the pre-Inca chullpas of Ninamarca and the colonial town of Paucartambo before crossing the Acjanaco checkpoint (3,530 m), gateway to Manu's Cultural Zone. From there, a continuous descent along the eyebrow of the jungle: puna gives way to elfin forest and then cloud forest (1,500 m), with short walks to observe orchids, bromeliads, giant ferns and hummingbirds. In the afternoon, visit to the lek of the Andean cock-of-the-rock, where Peru's national bird performs its courtship display in the mist. With luck: mountain toucans, quetzals, woolly monkeys and traces of the spectacled bear. Dinner and night at a cloud-forest lodge; optional night walk to look for frogs and night monkeys.

At dawn, a second visit to the cock-of-the-rock lek — its most active hour — and breakfast. Final descent by road past Pilcopata to Puerto Atalaya (600 m), with an optional 1.5-hour canoeing run on gentle class I–II rapids of the Alto Madre de Dios. Motorized boat to the lodge's private reserve: herons, kingfishers, capybaras and turtles along the banks. Lunch and a forest walk: medicinal plants, centuries-old ceibas, leaf-cutter ant highways. At sunset we explore Machuwasi Lake by paddled catamaran: hoatzins, horned screamers, red-capped cardinals, small caimans and monkeys on the shores. At night, a flashlight walk and caiman spotting by the red shine of their eyes. Dinner and night at the lodge.

Before dawn, we navigate to the parrot clay lick on the Alto Madre de Dios: dozens of blue-headed parrots, white-eyed parakeets and chestnut-fronted macaws descend on the clay wall in the first hours of the morning — the show lasts until mid-morning on clear days. Return to the lodge for breakfast and farewell to the lowland jungle. Boat upriver to Puerto Atalaya and a stop at the hummingbird garden of the Pico de Hoz viewpoint (750 m): toucans, king vultures and dozens of hummingbirds inches from your camera. The van climbs back through the cloud forest, crosses Acjanaco and descends through Paucartambo toward the Cusco valley, with lunch en route. Arrival in the city in the late afternoon and hotel drop-off.
